Purple Coneflower Echinacea purpurea is a perennial that reseeds and will grow in sun or part shade depending on the moisture available. If it is in a sunny site it will prefer water nearby. If in part shade it will adapt to dryer conditions. Planting method suggests to thin turf, broadcast seeds over area, rake or drag to make contact with soil. Water occasionally until sprouted. Echinacea recently was placed on the endangered species list in Florida. There is only one native colony known to exist in Florida today. The seed sold by the Salter Tree and Herb Farm is a north Florida ecotype. The origin of the seed is from a family garden that traced back over three generations. Considering the colony has been growing continually for 75 years, it is possible the original plants came from the wild when Echinacea was more prevalent. True or not, this seed source has adapted to growing conditions in Florida and offers a higher success rate and longevity than seeds from other zones in the US.
